Personal View of 'Eveline, Dubliners'(James Joyce)
Eveline by James Joyce
Rating: 9/10
It is obvious that people are used to choice one between a responsibility and a thing that they dreamed of. Eveline is the story of a lady who is driven to the path of choice.
I could easily understand that Frank, the boy who wants to go to the Buenos Aires with Eveline, does not have a pure intention. I don't know what does he want to do, but I can feel something is hidden, like human trafficking. I also found out that there was no ship goes to the Buenos Aires directly in 20th century, so it becomes more obvious.
However, no matter she knows Frank's intention, her choice to remain is not her own choice. It can be seen that she wants to go with Frank. Then why she could not move?
I think that it is the way to show the person who lost the right to choose themselves in an era of chaos. In other words, she is 'paralyzed'. Eveline is used as a material to show young people who lost themselves.
We can easily see 'Evelines' in modern society. People who lost their dreams because of money, students who only studies to go to the university, and so on. The fact that it is a subject that can be applied to modern society is the reason Eveline is still a famous work.
