Personal View of 'Gooseberries'(Anton Chekhov)
Gooseberries by Anton Chekhov
Rating: 7.5/10
This story deals with 'happiness'. I want to focus on the relativity of happiness. There are three people in this story and let's start with Alyohin. He has a large house, and farm, so it shows that he is rich. However, I felt that he is not interested in rich things, because he even doesn't use his house fully and work hard. His work makes him happy by seeing him work hard even when he is rich. I interpret this part Alyohin as a person who loves routine and things to do.
The second one is Nicholay, Ivan's brother. His brother loves gooseberries, a value that is not often sought by others. Although his actions to reach his happiness, money and gooseberry, are untenable. However, I think the attitude of striving for one goal, not yielding to the gaze of others, and achieving results, in the end, is commendable. At least, it is much better than to Ivan, who belittles others' goals.
I appreciate this story, and it makes me interested in Anton Chekhov's literary world. Good story, and better message. This story makes me sad about the fact that World Literature class will not discuss Anton Chekhov more.
